| SCADA
for HYDROELECTRIC POWER GENERATION AND DISTRIBUTION |
|
PROBLEM DESCRIPTION AND SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS:
A hydroelectric utility required a real-time supervisory
control and data acquisition (SCADA) and sequence of event recording
system to monitor and control power generation and transmission,
as well as substation activity and lake levels. The existing control
system contained outdated PDP 11s that only allowed monitoring
and had no control or sequence of events capabilities.
REALFLEX SOLUTION:
RealFlex and one LanFlex workstation are currently
installed at the largest generating station which has four generators.
MiniFlex, which is limited to 500 database points, is installed
at seven other generating stations, which have only one generator.
The engineering staff at the utility company wrote its own parallel
communication device driver to interface to the RTP using RealFlex
Systems' Custom Development Kit. Their driver is able to provide
control and sequence of event recording in the 50 millisecond range.
The staff can call in and identify problems from a portable PC.
RESULTS:
The customer saved a vast amount of money by
choosing RealFlex. RealFlex provided the necessary real-time performance
on an inexpensive PC-based system.
